BACKBONE

Backbone ferociously brings to life the electricity, circuitry, and impulses of a sentient land as it emerges from millions of years of restlessness. With powerful live music and highly physical solos, duets and ensembles, the performers interpret nature's spine and landscapes to embody Indigenous mapping and Western cartography.

Nominated for 3 Dora Mavor Moore Awards

Co-produced and original commission by the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity.

“The choreography is raw and frequently ferocious.”

– The Offenburger, Germany

“Powerful…hypnotizing..flawless articulation."

– The Dance Current

“Charged…the combination of sound and motion felt like an extension of my own heartbeat. That’s no faint praise.”
– The Globe and Mail

“Backbone represents an Indigenous vision and philosophy of mapping land and space that is visually arresting and emotionally impactful. With live percussion, virtuosic choreography, and a stunning display of physical strength, Backbone is impressive.”
– The Coast

“It is vigorous, aerobic, living and breathing, shifting, rising and falling and faster than you expect.”
– Mooney On Theatre

“Insanely physical, raw, athletic, sensual, and a bold assertion of Indigenous truths.”
